Empty Bowls Delray Beach is a grassroots event that raises money for hunger relief in Palm Beach County. This unique event invites the public to “eat simply, so others can simply eat.” Old School Bakery provides rustic breads more than 30 local chefs donate their signature soups, all served by local celebrities. Guests share in a simple meal of bread, soup, and water. Each receive a unique bowl to take home as a powerful reminder of all the empty bowls in the community. Local schools (including American Heritage, FAU, Gulf Stream, Palm Beach State, Pine Crest, St. Andrews, and St. Joseph’s Episcopal) create bowls to sell during the event.

Enjoy an enchanting production starring Palm Beach Opera’s Benenson Young Artists and Bailey Apprentice Artists. Based on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tale, this charming classic features a full orchestra, a lush folk-inspired score by Engelbert Humperdinck, and an imaginative set made entirely out of paper! Young Singers of the Palm Beaches will also perform as the Children’s Chorus. Sung in English with English supertitles above the stage.

There will be (1) 25 intermission during each performance.

Street photography is an exercise in the art of observation: paying attention to the theater that goes on in every city and town, and capturing moments that tell stories. This course will walk you through the streets of Delray Beach to share insights on the art of candid street photography, from gear choices to shooting techniques. Immerse yourself in the thick of things, overcome your nerves and adjust your camera to respond as quickly as possible. We will spend part of our class time on the streets of Delray and the other part in class discussing and critiquing our images. Topics include: Street photography gear, shooting with a long lens, shooting with a short lens, photographing a crowd, focusing on people, getting permission to photograph someone, shooting people in motion, reviewing images in a classroom setting.

The countdown to 2020 begins at Old School Square as guests usher in the New Year with A Donna Summer Celebration concert! The concert celebrates the life and career of the disco queen, Donna Summer, from the mouth of her very own sister and back-up singer, Mary Gaines Bernard.

Bernard, who traveled and performed with Summer throughout her booming career calls the concert a “family get together”. “I’m meeting more cousins every show” says Bernard. Fans of all ages connect with Summer’s songs. “Her songs are a soundtrack to people’s lives. When I perform Donna’s hits like, Hot Stuff or Love to Love You Baby, it transcends people, including myself, to a time when they were younger and life was easier,” says Bernard.

In addition to great music, patrons will hear untold stories from Summer’s tours and private life, including details about her last moments on earth. The celebration encourages patrons to dance into the New Year.
